Sweets and Beats

Introduction

From the heart of the motherland, the African drum once spoke the language of spirit, unity, and resistance. As our ancestors were taken across oceans through the slave trade, they carried that rhythm deep within – in pulse, in memory, in soul. Across continents, those ancient beats blended with new worlds, bringing new sounds such as jazz, blues, funk, house, hip-hop, dubstep and techno- all echoing the same ancestral beat. Now, sweets and beats call that rhythm back home in the form of house and electronic music, which was pioneered by an African American named Frankie Knuckles from Chicago in the United States of America. A night where techno meets tribal, dubstep meets drum, and the global sound reconnects with its source full circle. Every drop, every kick, every bassline becomes a prayer – A return to origin, a celebration of evolution and overcoming, and this literally translates to the famous saying that says when life gives you lemons, make lemonade in the sense that music and frequencies have always been used as a coping mechanism across a plethora of emotions and ceremonies in the African continent. We dance not just for pleasure but for remembrance, for freedom, for the sweet reunion of our beats and our history. This is more than music; this is the journey of rhythm completing its circle.

The event includes fast industrial and hardcore electronic sounds mostly enjoyed by hardcore ravers, for example, techno, Afro tech, Dubstep, Gqom, and the like.

It Includes a full night out at a venue fitting the aesthetic of the sound in order to create a certain feeling for the listener that puts them in a trance of remembrance and unity of where the sound first came from, it’s more of a call to community especially for diaspora Africans and people of all other cultures who have been influenced and enjoy this type of music.

The event takes place as a regular club night or festival night from 10 PM to 6 AM.

(This event takes place during the third quarter of the year)
